We Nigerians have a lot of drinks we prepare for our daily intake and one of them is Tiger Nut Milk which is locally known as Kunun Aya in Hausa.
Tiger Nut Milk is a special Nigerian drink that is prepared mostly for home consumption or commercial purpose.
It is prepared using Aya also known as Tiger Nut, dates (dabino) and coconut (kwakwa). Some people add flavor to it when preparing, but I won’t be adding any flavor to my Tiger Nut Milk today.
When you want to make kunun aya, it’s preferable to buy the big dry ones and soak in water for three days. You will have to be changing the water every day to make sure the nuts do not get sour.

To grind, it’s best to use your personal blender compared to using a commercial grinding machine. Because it might cause the taste to change cause of previous grinding.
But if you must use a commercial machine, ask the owner to wash the grinding machine very well.
After you are done with making the kunun aya, it’s better to put it in suitable rubbers and put in the fridge. Because it tends to coagulate over night when left outside the fridge.
You can serve your Kunun Aya with Puff Puff, Buns, Biscuits, Cookies, Cakes etc.
After the soaking, then we begin.
INGREDIENTS
- 4 cups of Tiger Nut (Aya)
- ½ cup of Dates (Dabino)
- 1 full Coconut (Kwakwa)
- 1 cup of Sugar
PREPARATION
Add water to the dates and allow to soak for 10 – 15 minutes.
Note: This is to make it soft and easy to break or cut through.
Break the coconut, remove the shell and turn in a bowl and add water. Then cut it into small chunks.

Wash the soaked tiger nuts well and turn in a suitable rubber.
Wash the chunks of coconut and add to it.

Divide the dates in two halves and remove the seeds in it.
Wash well and add to the tiger nut and coconut. Add a little water and mix.

Then grind or blend.

After grinding, get a wide bowl and spread a sieve in it.
Turn the grounded paste in the sieve and add a liter of water and sieve.
After sieving, add the sugar and mix well with a spatula till the sugar dissolves.
Now the Tiger Nut Milk drink is ready.

Turn the sieved Tiger Nut Milk in suitable rubbers and put in the fridge to get cold so you can serve it when chilled.
